Cadets Prepare To Honor Veterans at Wreaths Across America Ceremony

November 29, 2010 by Capt Robin Helgager 2 Comments »

Bemidji Civil Air Patrol cadets are preparing for the annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony on Saturday, December 11.   The public is invited to attend.  The ceremony in Bemidji will mirror the ceremony held at Arlington National Ceremony; same time, same script, same wreaths from Harrington, Maine will be used.

Veterans and cadets will lay ceremonial wreaths in the middle of the cemetery to honor the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Merchant Marines, Navy, Public Health, POW’s and Law Enforcement.

Immediately following the ceremony, cadets will take wreaths to the grave sight of veterans, place the wreath, take two steps backward, render a salute and hold for a moment of silence for the veteran.

In This Season of Thankfulness, Be Thankful For Our Local Newspaper!

November 28, 2010 by Capt Robin Helgager No Comments »

During this season of thankfulness, I would like to express thankfulness for our local Bemidji Pioneer – in print form and on the web .

Never take for granted the friend you have in your local newspaper!  In talking with other squadron commanders around the country, they are quite surprised at the level of interest our local paper takes in our local programs.

Thank you for the time and patience needed to work with all of us not in the “news business”.  We appreciate you and are grateful for helping us to get our story out into the community.

CIVIL AIR PATROL MEMBERSHIP SOARS PAST 61,000

NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS – In the wake of a national economic recession and on the uphill climb out of that slump, service organizations across the country are struggling to simply maintain membership numbers and carry out the basics of their mission statements.

Yet Civil Air Patrol is once again proving itself to be one of America’s strongest and most committed nonprofit service organizations.

Today, CAP boasts a force of close to 61,500 volunteers.

“It’s an honor to have so many people willing to serve their nation through membership in CAP,” said Maj. Gen. Amy S. Courter, CAP’s national commander. “I’m very pleased to see us regain the 60,000-member milestone.”

Hitting 60,176 in July marked the first time membership had surpassed 60,000 since immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when the figure shot up to nearly 65,000.

Current membership includes 35,048 senior members and 26,335 cadets – 61,383 at the end of October.

Consistently increasing volunteer numbers is crucial to CAP’s success, Courter said, particularly in its ongoing role as the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.

“Since the Air Force relies upon us to assist them with performing a significant number of Air Force missions in the continental United States, our membership strength is important to fulfill our service to the nation,” Courter said. “We are citizens serving communities – and every one of our members is important to our service.”

“This achievement means a great deal,” said Col. Skip Guimond, national senior adviser for support. “It means we are accomplishing our mission, demonstrating not only to our members, but also to the public at large, that we are serving the country and our local communities.

“It shows our efforts are worthwhile and worth participating in.”

Julia Long, age 12, joined CAP’s Baranof Composite Squadron in Sitka, Alaska, as a cadet airman basic in August. Her great-grandfather’s and father’s military service sparked her interested in CAP, and her uncle was a CAP cadet. She joined because she knows how beneficial the cadet program will be as she strives to reach her career goal.

“I mainly joined so I can learn about discipline and what it is going to take to be able to serve in the Air Force once I am of age,” Julia said. “I hope to fly aircraft and see the world,”

So far, CAP is providing exactly what she hoped to find, and she’s enjoying the entire experience.

“I have learned discipline, structure and what it takes to maintain my physical fitness so I can be effective as a cadet. I also have been able to experience flying small aircraft,” Julia said.

“I like the physical training that comes with being a member in CAP. I like to be a part of the team and to work with other members of CAP.”

CAP’s reach is multifaceted, ranging from emergency services missions like search and rescue to playing a leading role in aerospace education and serving as mentors for America’s youth. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of the Air Force and other federal, state and local agencies.

Last year, CAP was called on to perform a larger number of missions, many related to homeland security, and Guimond believes this has contributed to CAP’s membership growth.

“Certainly the extra activity is important, and it draws people,” he said.

But it’s not all about these missions.

“That activity is a key part of what we do, but reaching our overall goals in all three areas – cadets, emergency services and aerospace education –  is who we are,” Guimond said. “So, in addition to more missions, our outreach to youth, drug demand reduction programs and school programs are also critical to growth.”

Another new cadet member, Kolbe Compton, is proving how effectively CAP molds the leaders of tomorrow through its cadet program. The 12-year-old joined the Kentucky Wing’s Boone County Composite Squadron in September and said he’s already learned some valuable lessons.

“I’m learning responsibility and how to truly be respectful to others,” Kolbe said.

There is no doubt that his maturity, along with other skills CAP instills, will be noticed by those around him.

And it seems the more people know about CAP, the more they like it.

“The broader exposure of all of CAP’s activities has helped drive membership, too,” Guimond said. “We’ve gotten much better at getting the word out, and once people know who we are and what we do, they want to be a part of it.”

Courter said current CAP members are helping spread the message about everything CAP offers.

“We would have to reach back more than a decade to witness the sustained growth we have had in CAP over the last three years,” she said. “This vote of confidence shown by members recruiting their friends and colleagues to join CAP tells us CAP is on the right track.”

Both Guimond and Courter are proud of CAP’s accomplishments, but the national commander stressed there’s no reason to rest on those laurels.

“CAP has matured as an organization. While we have more distance to cover, we are well on our way down the right path,” Courter said. “People join CAP for many reasons; we need to look at all of those reasons to help keep them interested in CAP.”

And that path will soon be even easier to travel, Guimond said. “We are about to establish a new section of our staff devoted primarily to recruiting,” he said.

“I believe this will aid us in keeping those membership numbers rising.”

“Lead By Example” Awards Given to Bemidji Community Leaders

October 31, 2010 by Capt Robin Helgager 6 Comments »

Seven Bemidji area community members were awarded the “Lead By Example” award at Bemidji Civil Air Patrol’s Annual Dining Out recently.  The criteria for this award includes being a person of integrity, demonstrating proven leadership in the community, showing good communication skills when teaching our young people, and to have spent time working with our cadets at events during the year.

Bemidji CAP Commander, Capt. Robin Helgager comments, “We have such a short time in the lives of our young people, that I choose very carefully who we put in their path for them to emulate.   It is an awesome responsibility to choose what type of leaders we offer as examples to our cadets.  We are very fortunate to have exceptional leaders in this community who have time honored skills in leadership, teamwork, communication with young people, positive attitudes and, of course, integrity.”

Here is a snapshot of Bemidji Civil Air Patrol’s 2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winners from our recent Dining Out and Awards Program:

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winner:  Mayor Richard Lehman

Mayor Lehmann was chosen again this year for the “Lead By Example” Award for his support of our cadets through attending our events,  and modeling what it means to be a committed civil servant.    Mayor Lehmann is known for seeking out our cadets at events to shake their hand and encourage them to be the best they can be in school, work and CAP!.  He knows many of our cadets by name and takes every opportunity to tell them he is proud of them!

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winner:  Sheriff Phil Hodapp

Sheriff Phil Hodapp was chosen again this year for the “Lead By Example”" Award for the leadership he has modeled to  our cadets.  Sheriff Hodapp has spent many hours training our cadets in issues of safety and personal responsibility.  He is a favorite instructor for our cadets!  Sheriff Hodapp has been instrumental coordinating Bemidji’s Civil Air Patrol capabilities for Search and Rescue and Disaster Relief projects through combined training opportunities and actual missions.  He spends numerous hours each year preparing our cadets and senior members to work parking cars at the Beltrami County Fair. Because of his hands on hours with our program, he knows many of our cadets by name.

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winner:  Commissioner Joe Vene

Commissioner Joe Vene  was chosen again this year for the “Lead By Example”" Award for his presence in our cadet leadership laboratory.  Commissioner Vene has been a constant encouragement and supporter of our cadets throughout the year.  He regularly attends our events and challenges our cadets to be the best they can be in all aspects of their life. Commissioner Vene has given our cadets many opportunities to learn to our service men and women who have given so much to protect our way of life.

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winner:  Ashli Bowen, Bemidji Area United Way Director

Ashli Bowen was chosen as one of our “Lead By Example” Award winners because of the opportunities she presents to our cadet program.  Ashli has been dedicated not only to model servant leadership and a great positive attitude, but also has provided numerous opportunities for our cadets to serve through Bemidji Area United Way projects such as  Coats for the Community and  Holiday Gifts for Kids.  Ashli is always giving a word of encouragement, or making a new cadet feel welcome!  Ashli’s events are our cadet’s favorite activities!

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winner:  Beryl Wernberg, Beltrami County Emergency Services Director and 911 Dispatch Coordinator

Beryl Wernberg was chosen again this year as one of our “Lead By Example” winners for her tireless  example of an Emergency Services leader.  Beryl has been a champion of our cadets for many years and the cadets feel the same way about her.  She spends countless hours with our cadets each year before, during and after the Beltrami County Fair getting them ready for the job at hand. . . . parking hundreds of cars each day!  Beryl knows our cadets well and provides special training on different topics for them each year.  Whether parking cars or sandbagging during a flood, the cadets think the world of Beryl as a leader and a friend!

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winner:  Steve McGuirk, EAA/Young Eagles Pilot

Steve McGuirk was chosen as a “Lead By Example” winner for his gift of flight to the majority of the cadets in our program.  Steve has given over 400 Young Eagle flights to area children over the last few years at his own expense.  Steve leads by example in the many children he impacts through the thrill of aviation – giving children sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity to fly and his encouragement to each one of them to be the best they can be.

2010 “Lead By Example” Award Winners:  Randy and Mary Forseth, Beltrami County Mounted Posse (picture not available)

Posse Randy and Posse Mary, as our cadets call them,  are again “Lead By Example” winners this year for their leadership example to our cadets.  Randy and Mary spend many hours a year working with our cadets at the Beltrami County Fair and various other projects.  Any time a cadet needs a break or more water, the Forseth team is there to lend a hand.  Randy and Mary are “go to” team members that our cadets have come to rely on at the Fair.  Their servant attitude and willingness to work with our young people is such an encouragement to our cadets.  Randy and Mary know our cadets well.  We are grateful for their leadership and support of our program.

Bemidji Civil Air Patrol Asks Community For Support

September 10, 2010 by Capt Robin Helgager No Comments »

Bemidji’s Civil Air Patrol is hosting it’s Annual Dining Out and Awards Program October 9 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Bemidji – and the squadron needs your help!

The Annual Dining Out is the squadron’s largest fund raising activity of the year bringing in much needed funds to support our program.  Squadrons are not funded by the Air Force.  They raise their funds individually from the communities they serve.  The support we have received from the community has allowed us to be very active in community service averaging almost 1,000 hours a month in volunteer service for the past 4 years!

Tickets this year are again only $22 per person for a meal of Minnesota Chicken.  We also have added something new to our program – LIVE Streaming!  If you are not able to attend the event, but would like to support our program, purchase a LIVE Streaming ticket for only $20 and watch the event on your computer.

Whether you come to support our squadron for the work they are doing with area young people, or just want to see what CAP is all about, join us on October 9th!    RSVP’s and checks need to be received no later than September 20th.

Email BemidjiCAP@gmail.com for a registration form!

Thank you for helping us serve the Bemidji Area and develop tomorrow’s leaders.
